China Iron & Steel Research Institute Group Co., Ltd. (CISRI) is a central enterprise directly managed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC). With the consent of the State Council and under the approval of SASAC, former Central Iron & Steel Research Institute (founded in 1952) was renamed as China Iron & Steel Research Institute Group Co., Ltd, and Automation Research and Design Institute of Metallurgical Industry (founded in 1973) was merged into CISRI. CISRI is the largest comprehensive R&D and high-tech industrialized institution in China’s metallurgical industry. In May 2009, under the approval of SASAC, it was restructured into a wholly state-owned company and its board of directors was set up.

CISRI is one of the first 103 pilot innovative enterprises in China and one of the first 100 innovative enterprises in Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park. It has been serving as the R&D base for new metal materials, the innovation base for major key and common technologies in metallurgical industry, and the authoritative institution for metallurgical analysis and test technology. Relying on CISRI, 19 national-level centers and laboratories, 25 provincial-level centers and 8 industrial technology innovation alliances have been set up. At present, CISRI boasts more than 5,000 scientific research achievements, including 296 national awards, 1,115 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological progress awards, more than 2,400 granted patents and 292 registered software copyrights. It has 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 winners of the prize for scientific and technological innovation from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, 27 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, 3 winners of the national youth science and technology award, 67 doctoral supervisors, 116 supervisors of master’s degree, 874 winners of senior professional titles, and 299 winners of special government allowance. It has set up a graduate school, with 2 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points and 5 first-level discipline master’s degree authorization points, 2 post-doctoral mobile stations and 3 post-doctoral workstations.

Based on its main responsibility and main business, CISRI gives play to its advantages and enhances collaboration, focusing on “research and development of common key and cutting-edge technologies”, “key materials and products”, “green and intelligent metallurgical processes and projects”, “scientific and technological services for system solutions” and “capital empowerment and investment operation”. It has formed the key materials and products sector mainly composed of Antai Technology [000969] and CISRI Gaona [300034], the science and technology service sector mainly including Central Iron & Steel Research Institute (Central Research Institute), Engineering Department (including AriTime [600560]), NCS [300797] and CISRI Hipex), and the investment empowerment and mass entrepreneurship and innovation platform based on CISRI investment. During the 14th Five-year Plan period, CISRI will further base itself on Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, thoroughly develop the Yellow River Economic Cooperation Zone, lay out the Yangtze River Delta, expand the Great Bay Area, actively respond to the call of the Belt and Road, and constantly expand the international layout.
