As the innovation base of key common technologies in China’ metallurgical industry, CISRI has successively presided over more than 50% of the R&D tasks of major key and common technologies in the iron & steel industry in technological innovation of iron and steel processes, process intelligence and green low-carbon transformation and development. It has obtained more than 1,000 major scientific and technological achievements, and more than 60 national science and technology awards. With 7 national innovation platforms, it has made great contributions to the technological progress, transformation and upgrading of China’s iron & steel industry.

With the promotion and implementation of carbon peaking, carbon neutrality and other national strategies, CISRI will focus on promoting the technical breakthrough of in-depth integration of multiple disciplines and organic collaboration of multiple processes in the whole process. It will continue to lead the industry in technological innovation and sustainable development under the guidance of the idea of “theoretical research - technology research and development - system integration - project demonstration”.

Steelmaking and Continuous Casting

CISRI has overcome the high-strength and long-life combined blowing, low-oxygen balance control in full furnace service and other core key technologies, making China’s converter steelmaking technology achieve a leap from following to leading. Its research level in high-efficiency continuous casting, thin slab continuous casting and continuous rolling variety development, continuous casting production of micro-alloyed steel, quality control of special steel bloom and other aspects has reached the domestic or international leading level. Its patented technologies and achievements have covered many countries and regions, and it will gradually introduce its patented technologies with independent intellectual property rights to the international market.

Low Carbon Ironmaking

With the increasing shortage of coking coal resources, developing a new process of non-blast furnace ironmaking with coal instead of coke is an important means to reduce costs and increase efficiency in ironmaking. The one-step smelting reduction researched and developed by CISRI adopts the direct smelting of fine ores and pulverized coals, which saves the pre-iron agglomeration and coking processes, and the total capital construction cost is significantly lower than that of the blast furnace ironmaking method. One of the new generation low-carbon green smelting technologies researched and developed by CISRI is to achieve energy conservation, emission reduction and consumption reduction by injecting coke oven gas.

Energy and Environmental Protection & Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection

CISRI is the authoritative unit of green smelting, solid waste resource recycling, flue gas purification technology innovation and engineering transformation in China’s metallurgical industry. Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, it has successively undertaken more than 40 projects (special projects) including major science and technology projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the P.R.C, ranking among the best in the whole country in the same field.
